In a press conference announcing the hire of new general manager Randy Flores, Houston Astros owner Jim Crane took questions from the press alongside his new GM. The Astros did win the AL West once again in 2026, yet were swept out of the AL Wild Card round by the Chicago White Sox at home. With Flores now in charge of Houston's baseball operations, Crane wants his team back in World Series contention. Per team beat reporter Chandler Rome on X (formerly Twitter), Crane downplayed the idea of a trade fire sale.
“I don't think it's going to be a complete teardown at all,” Crane remarked.
Reports have indicated that the Astros could deal several players. First baseman Christian Walker and shortstop Jeremy Pena feel like the likeliest options. Closer Josh Hader could also be moved, alongside starters Hunter Brown and Cristian Javier. If Flores is going to get this roster back to true title contention, a few moves will have to be made.
Article Continues BelowThe main question is, how much leeway will Crane give his GM? Astros legend Jeff Bagwell still serves as a key member of the team's front office, and his voice looms large. Crane has routinely lent his efforts to Houston's offseason efforts since taking over as owner. With a first-time GM in charge, he'll likely do so again. Will this roster have more of Flores' influence, alongside a new manager? Or will Crane's decision-making again lead to another championship-less season for the Astros in 2027? Until Flores' choice as manager is in place, there are still quite a few questions to answer in Space City.
