NFL fans can expect to hear analyst Kirk Herbstreit for Amazon Prime Video's Thursday Night Football games in a contract that includes a twist regarding Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay.
The Athletic reports that Prime Video has extended Herbstreit to remain its analyst for Thursday Night Football. However, the contract gives Amazon the flexibility to move on from him if someone else becomes available, such as “top target” McVay.
Before signing the extension, Herbstreit was in the final year of his five-year contract. The Athletic notes that his new deal is “shorter” than his first one, but the exact length wasn't confirmed.
Additionally, his deal with ESPN for calling college football games is set to end after the season. However, the network isn't keen on addressing it until after the season concludes.
McVay has been one of Prime Video's targets for a long time. He was recruited by the streaming service before it ultimately landed on Herbstreit five years ago.
According to The Athletic, Prime Video was prepared to offer McVay a broadcasting deal that would pay him around $20 million per year. However, he ultimately decided to return to the Rams as the team's head coach.
McVay, 40, is in the middle of his 10th season with the Rams. He has led the team to two Super Bowls, winning one, and another NFC Championship Game during the 2025 season. Overall, the Rams have made the playoffs in seven of his 10 seasons as the coach.
However, the team is currently spiraling at 1-2. They are coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Denver Broncos. Reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford has struggled at times. He has already thrown half (four) of the interceptions he threw all of last year (eight).
That was during the TV offseason when Tom Brady inked a 10-year, $375 million deal with FOX. The broadcasting business is booming, and Herbstreit is cashing in.
