The Washington Commanders could have captured loads of momentum by snatching victory from the New York Giants in overtime, but they are instead the biggest punchline in the sport. A 27-27 tie did little to help the squad in the standings, and it is certainly not mending the embarrassment that players and coaches currently feel.

Jayden Daniels shocked the world by scrambling around and taking a sack on the final play of overtime, denying the Commanders a chance to attempt a game-winning field goal inside the Giants' 25-yard line. It does not look any less disastrous from the All-22 view.

Despite having no timeouts remaining, Daniels and the rest of the offense showed a worrying lack of urgency after the play ended. The damage was done, however. Once the former Offensive Rookie of the Year opted not to spike the ball or throw the pigskin away, Washington's fate was sealed. The mockery will only persist in the wake of his postgame remarks.

Daniels took accountability, but he did not outright admit to losing track of the timeout situation. Offensive lineman Chris Paul later said that the topic was discussed in the huddle, adding only more confusion to this fiasco. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn deserves at least some blame for the obvious disconnect, but No. 5 is drowning in bad optics right now.

The public is craving clarity. Though, no explanation will probably repair this massive botch.

All Washington (1-3-1) can do now is redeem itself on the field. A Monday night road game against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers is certainly not an ideal matchup in the wake of the Landover catastrophe, but a victorious outcome should definitely quiet the laughter.
