The Chicago Bears were completely unstoppable on offense in Week 1. Chicago scored a whopping 59 points against Carolina to start the 2026 regular season. That makes all of the regression talk around the Bears look a bit silly, at least at this point in the season.
ESPN's Adam Schefter was in complete awe of Johnson and the Chicago offense after their huge Week 1 showing.
âÂÂRegress my a**, I mean give me a break,â Schefter said on Tuesday via The Adam Schefter Podcast. âÂÂIt's unbelievable, right? What's incredible is that this is what Ben Johnson said. And when he said that he wanted to be the highest-scoring offense and to set records, we all talked about the fact that he was just putting an even larger target on his back for the coming season. In Week 1, it didn't matter. And after the game, he went back to it.âÂÂ
Chicago put up 552 total yards of offense in Week 1, scoring at least 14 points in every quarter. The Bears are now on track to be one of the league's best offenses if they can keep up this pace.
âÂÂThe 2013 Broncos, who averaged nearly 38 points per game, scored an NFL single-season record 606 points. The Bears scored 59 in their opener, and Chicago HC Ben Johnson has not shied away from pursuing the Broncosâ points record,â Schefter posted alongside the clip from his podcast.
Schefter believes Johnson does an incredible job of combining great coaching with entertaining soundbites.
âÂÂIt's a different message than we get from other coaches,â Schefter concluded. âÂÂHe understands this is entertainment. This is part of the deal. People love to turn to football for their escape. They want to be brought in, they want to be amused. Ben Johnson is providing incredible coaching and great entertainment and fun for the fans that follow the Bears.âÂÂ
It will be exciting to see if Chicago's offense can keep up the pace in Week 2 against one of the league's most vicious defenses.
Next up for the Bears is a home game against the Vikings. That NFC North contest kicks off at 1PM ET on September 20th from Soldier Field.
