Led by Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, the Indiana Fever tied their playoff series against the Las Vegas Aces with a 99-89 Game 2 victory. However, part of the focus was on A’ja Wilson, who was not at her efficient best and had a confrontation with a fan behind the baseline.
The altercation occurred with just over four minutes remaining after Sophie Cunningham was whistled for a foul on Wilson. As Cunningham disputed the call, a fan seated behind the basket stood up and pointed toward Wilson, who quickly responded and multiple Aces players had to quickly step in.
Post-game, Wilson had a simple rationale for what made her lose her calm, per ESPN.
“No way he does that to LeBron [James],” she said.
Wilson reiterated multiple times that she had a problem with the way the fan in question stepped towards her and pointed at her. She herself ended up receiving a technical foul as the fan was escorted out of the arena.
“I try to play my game … but if I am just walking, just got the foul, I'm chilling and I see a man come at me, taking steps toward me and pointing at me, I don't give a damn what you said,” she said. “I don't give a damn how you said it, the tone. That is unacceptable. You don't step toward me. You never should sit and point at me. That there is unacceptable.”
Article Continues BelowWilson later apologized to her teammates but claimed that there were some things she was not going to allow. The now four-time MVP claimed that while fans were allowed to both love and hate her, they also had to give her respect.
“You can hate me with all your heart. But you don't know me. But I guarantee you will respect me,” she said.
After speaking with the individual and witnesses, Fever officials determined there had been no violation of the arena's Fan Code of Conduct. The fan was subsequently allowed to return to his seat, a decision Wilson also disagreed with post-game.
Game 3 will now take place in Las Vegas as the Aces will attempt to edge ahead once again.
