It's officially gut check time for the New York Yankees. After suffering a 5-2 defeat to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday in Game 2 of the ALDS, the Yankees are now down 2-0 in the series. They will be facing elimination on Wednesday when the series shifts to Yankee Stadium, and one has to think that there's nowhere else to go for New York but up after shooting themselves in the foot in Game 2.
This loss was self-inflicted. They committed four errors as the team, as of the five runs the Yankees allowed, only two counted as “earned”. Moreover, their offense was rather toothless yet again, as they had to rely on Ben Rice's heroics just to be able to put a few runs on the board.
Nonetheless, Yankees manager Aaron Boone is not losing hope, as he believes that his team has the cojones to come back even after making a mess of themselves in two games at Tropicana Field.
“A really rough night to say the least for us. We've got to get over it. We've responded all year to difficult times and we've got to do it again,” Boone said in his postgame presser, via SNY Yankees on X.

It's a heartbreaker for the Yankees to see a start from ace Cam Schlittler go to waste. Schlittler lasted just 4.1 innings before Boone pulled him to contain what was becoming a concerning situation in the fifth inning, when the Yankees allowed the Rays to score four runs.
Their offense is the bigger concern. Their hitters from the three to seven spots went 0-33 from the plate combined through the first two games of the series, so some positive regression could be in order.
Max Fried will be the one to take the bump for the Yankees in Game 3 opposite Nick Martinez for the Rays. Game 3 of the Yankees-Rays ALDS clash will be on Wednesday at 8:00 PM E.T.
