The Major League Baseball season is near its end, and that means teams have little time left to qualify for the playoffs. The San Diego Padres have been red-hot as the season comes to a close. They are now ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the latest Wild Card standings, for the National League.

Ethan Salas hit a walk-off single for San Diego on Saturday night. The Padres defeated the Miami Marlins, 7-6. Salas is a top prospect in the Padres farm system.

“It’s different, man,” Salas said, per MLB.com. “You got 50,000 going ballistic for you and the boys ready for you if everything works out. It definitely felt awesome … a lot different than the Minor Leagues.”

The win on Saturday was absolutely monumental for San Diego. It was their ninth in the last 10 games.

“With their 12th win in their last 13 games, the Padres jumped the Phillies, who lost to the Mets earlier in the evening, to claim sole possession of the second National League Wild Card spot. They now have the same record as the Cubs, though Chicago owns the head-to-head tiebreaker and technically remains in the No. 1 position. The Phillies, who are now a game behind the Padres, also hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over San Diego,” MLB.com reported.

This season, the National League has been stronger collectively than the American League. Several teams including the Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins looked to clinch a Wild Card spot. With just days left to go in the campaign, San Diego has put most of them in the rear-view mirror.

San Diego plays the Marlins again on Sunday. The Padres are now 86-69 on the campaign.
