Steve Kerr has established himself as one of the most successful coaches in NBA history after winning four NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors. And while he ended up joining the likes of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, Kerr was actually also being considered for the HC job at the New York Knicks, back in 2014.

Now, the 61-year-old tactician has revealed the two personalities that pushed him towards the Warriors. Speaking to The Ringer, Kerr revealed that he talked to the likes of Rick Carlisle and Danny Ferry, who were the Dallas Mavericks head coach and the Atlanta Hawks GM at this time, respectively.

“When I was going through that process, there were two people who really impacted that decision behind the scenes,” he said. “One was Rick Carlisle, and the other was Danny Ferry. I think Danny was GM of the Hawks at the time. When I was going through it, I called him and I said, “What do you think?” He said, “What do you think Phil Jackson would do if he was in your shoes?””

Kerr claimed that just like how Phil Jackson joined the Chicago Bulls effectively because of the kind of talent they boasted of, he ended up joining the Warriors because of Stephen Curry. Kerr revealed how Carlisle claimed he was not sure how his team could beat Golden State considering the players they had.

“And then Rick was the head of the Coaches Association,” he said. “He called me out of the blue—and we were friends, but not super close. He just said, “Hey, I’ve been in the business for a while. Could I offer some unsolicited advice?” And I said, “Yeah.” And he goes, “When we played the Warriors last year, I would look across the court and I would think, ‘Man, I don’t know how we’re going to beat these guys. They’re loaded. Holy shit.’”

And while he ended up choosing the Warriors, Kerr revealed it was ‘dope’ for him to see the Knicks win the title last season. He also suggested that while both Carlisle and Ferry helped him make the decision, his heart was already set on Golden State.

“And so I think both guys pushed me in that direction, in the direction my heart already was,” he said. “I’m from California. My daughter was at Cal-Berkeley playing on the volleyball team. I tried to trade for Steph Curry when I was GM of the Suns. My heart was telling me all along, go coach the Warriors. But Phil Jackson [who was president of the Knicks at the time] meant that much to me that I was considering going to the Knicks and obviously made the right choice.”

Needless to say, it was the ideal decision for Kerr, who was rumored to be on the verge of leaving the Warriors at the end of last season. However, as things stand, Kerr, who also won five championships as a player, is looking to run it back once again with Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler as his top stars.
