Anthony Volpe somehow avoids tag on slide to home plate vs. Blue Jays

The New York Yankees begin a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. Meanwhile, shortstop Anthony Volpe is making his way back to the lineup after overcoming shoulder surgery in October 2025. On Monday, he showcased signs that he was back in a big way.

During the game, Volpe managed to surpass an obvious tag at the plate, per MLB. As he crossed home plate, his left hand crossed the plate just right before Blue Jays’ catcher Brandon Valenzuela put the tag on.

Volpe began his return to the active roster after filling in for Jose Caballero, who was placed on the injured list.

Overall, Volpe is known for being one of the most daring and capable base runners in the league. He has an uncanny ability to read pitchers and their timing. Additionally, Volpe has mastered what was known as the “Valut Lead”, in which he takes a slight lead off the base. Just enough to hop up and begin running before the pitcher throws the ball.

Since coming into the league in 2023, Volpe has amassed 213 runs scored. In his first year, he finished with 62 runs scored. His career high came in 2024 with 92 runs scored. Last year, Volpe finished with 65 runs scored.

Volpe is playing in his fifth game of the season. In his previous four games, Volpe is batting .222 with two hits, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Meanwhile, the Yankees are 28-19, three games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.

After playing the Blue Jays, the Yankees will begin a three-game series against the Rays at Yankee Stadium on Friday.
