Ally McCoist in hysterics as Guenther Steiner explains why Lewis Hamilton is the opposite to Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen is ‘throwing his toys out the pram’ as he continues to complain about the new regulations in Formula 1.

That’s the view of former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner as the four-time world champion launched into another rant about the new regulations after the Chinese Grand Prix.

Verstappen has been a consistent critic of the new rules since pre-season testing in Bahrain and believes it’s ‘ruining’ the sport.

The Dutchman spun out of qualifying in Australia and crashed out embarrassingly.

This meant he started in 20th with the 71-time race winner able to catch up to sixth behind Lando Norris.

The 28-year-old then had a frustrating weekend in Shanghai, as he had poor starts off the line in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix which saw him drop through the field.

Verstappen finished ninth in the former, one position away from points and was forced to retire the car on Sunday which meant he added nothing to his championship total.

It leaves him in eighth in the individual standings, with the Red Bull driver being very vocal after the race about the new cars.

Steiner spoke about the former world champion’s thoughts on the car with Ally McCoist and Gabby Agbonlahor on talkSPORT Breakfast.

The former Haas team principal said: “It’s not the fault of the regulations [for Max’s retirement], that’s the fault of the team if the car cannot start.

“It’s like the two McLarens not starting, that has not happened for a long time that two cars cannot even start a race.

“You cannot blame the regulations because most of the other cars started the race, except for [Gabriel] Bortoleto and [Alex] Albon.

“Max is not happy because the car is not where he likes it to be. Red Bull have a brand new engine and it’s advanced technology, it takes some time for the engineers to get used to.

“I think I’m actually surprised how the new engine manufacturers like Ford and Audi have done, so it will improve after a little bit of time.

“Max always throws the toys out of the pram when it doesn’t go his way.”

The reigning world champion has also supported Verstappen’s criticisms of the current regulations as he suffered his first DNS of his career alongside his teammate Oscar Piastri, Bortoleto, and Albon.

Seven drivers in total were not classified at the end of the race which included another former world champion Fernando Alonso.

Norris currently sits sixth in the drivers’ standings with a 36-point deficit to early leader George Russell.

However, even worse for McLaren, Piastri has not raced a single lap in a Grand Prix this season and only has three points on the board from the Sprint Race.

All three drivers who fought for the championship in Abu Dhabi last year did not finish the race around Shanghai.

Nevertheless, there are many drivers who have spoken positively about the change in rules including Lewis Hamilton.

The seven-time champion ended his 477-day trophy drought after standing on the podium in a Ferrari race suit for the first time.

Additionally, the Brit has been very complimentary towards the change in rules after he overcame a tense battle with his teammate Charles Leclerc.

Hamilton described the wheel-to-wheel racing with the Monegasque driver as ‘the best’ he has ever experienced in Formula 1.

The former team principal justified the 105-time race winner’s comments around the latest laws in a hilarious manner which left the two talkSPORT hosts in hysterics.

He said: “Guess why… because he is having success, the opposite of Max, when you are doing good that’s what it’s like.

“It has been over a year since he has been on the podium in a main race so obviously he’s enjoying it.

“Why would he be negative in something he has been successful in? It’s going to take some getting used to [with the new regulations] but it’s very good to see Lewis back.”

The Brit currently sits fourth in the drivers’ championship, a point behind the other Ferrari driver.

Hamilton will be excited to return to the track in two weeks at the Japanese Grand Prix, as the Scuderia will be hoping to finally overcome Mercedes for the first time this season.
