Allisha Gray gets core qualifying offer from Dream after Angel Reese trade

The Atlanta Dream are staying busy in the offseason in hopes of shoring up their roster and improving on last year’s campaign, wherein they lost to the Indiana Fever in the first round of the playoffs.

The Dream made the biggest splash so far after acquiring Angel Reese in a trade with the Chicago Sky on Monday. Atlanta gave up its first-round picks in 2027 and 2028 in exchange for Reese.

With the 23-year-old Reese now in the lineup, the Dream have turned their attention to Allisha Gray, who is an unrestricted free agent.

According to WNBA reporter Khristina Williams, the Dream have extended a core qualifying offer to Gray. It is a one-year, fully guaranteed deal with a supermax salary given to any player with a “core player” tag.

The 31-year-old guard is coming off a breakout campaign, averaging career-highs of 18.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists, and 34.5 minutes on top of 1.1 steals.

Gray teamed up with Rhyne Howard, Brittney Griner, and Briona Jones to lead Atlanta to a team-record 30 wins.

Gray was named to the All-WNBA First Team for the first time and earned her third straight selection to the All-Star Game. She finished fourth in MVP voting and third in Most Improved Player voting.

She blossomed in coach Karl Smesko’s first year with the Dream. Smesko handed Gray the keys and allowed her to play with more freedom and creativity.

With how Gray performed last season, it would only be logical for Atlanta to do everything to keep her. She could get a huge payday amid the WNBA’s new collective bargaining agreement.

If Gray stays, along with the rest of the core, plus the addition of Reese and a possible gem from the WNBA Draft, the Dream could finally win their first championship in the upcoming season.
