It was shocking enough that Alex Pereira suffered a stunning knockout loss to Ciryl Gane at UFC White House Freedom 250, but the aftermath added an unexpected subplot that has “Poatan” genuinely puzzled.

Jon Jones, the man widely regarded as the greatest heavyweight of all time, filmed himself reacting to Gane’s finish of Pereira, and the reaction was anything but subtle. There was just one problem, at least from Pereira’s perspective, he has no idea what he did to deserve it.

Speaking after the loss, a visibly confused Pereira addressed Jones’ reaction directly. “I saw the video, to be honest I was very surprised,” Pereira said. “If I was one of the guys that provoked him, then lose, then I’d understand, but I’ve never spoken bad about Jon Jones.”

It’s a fair point. Unlike many fighters who have taken verbal shots at Jones to generate attention or leverage a potential superfight, Pereira has largely kept his comments about the former light heavyweight king respectful. The two have never shared bad blood publicly, which makes Jones’ gleeful response all the more difficult for Pereira to process.

Jones’ motivation may be less about Pereira specifically and more about protecting his heavyweight throne. With Pereira representing perhaps the most dangerous stylistic threat in the division, seeing “Poatan” get knocked out cold may have simply been relieving for Jones on a competitive level, GOAT necklace and all.

For Pereira, the road back starts with understanding what went wrong against Gane. But Jones’ reaction has added an interesting wrinkle to the heavyweight landscape heading into the second half of 2026.
