Aaron Judge, Mike Trout’s wild HR duel like no other since 1956

On Monday night, Aaron Judge and Mike Trout, superstar outfielders for the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels, respectively, showed up and set the tone for their team to start off the week.

In fact, both of them hit two home runs each in an epic dinger duel, with the Yankees emerging victorious in the end, 11-10, thanks to a walk-off wild pitch that saw Jose Caballero stroll towards home plate after Jordan Romano lost control of his pitch.

But of course, stars are the ones who dictate the headlines, and Judge and Trout’s home run duel is sure to be the one to catch the attention of many fans. After all, both Judge and Trout have come to define what it means to be an elite outfielder in the big leagues over the past decade or so, and both have been so excellent that they’re part of the exclusive seven-person three-time MVP club.

To that end, Monday night marked only the second time in the history of MLB where two three-time MVPs hit two home runs each in a single game, as per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The last time this occurred was on the 21st of June way back in 1956, when Stan Musial and Roy Campanella each homered in the Brooklyn Dodgers’ 9-8 win on a walk-off home run from the latter.

Judge remains at the peak of his powers, much like Musial was back in 1956. Meanwhile, Trout is more like Campanella — the star on the downturn of his career. Nevertheless, Campanella never quite became a player of Trout’s caliber; on the other hand, Trout, prior to injuries, was on track to be the greatest player in the history of baseball.

It’s games like these that get fans to tune in, and they must have felt very satisfied to witness two of the game’s greats go at it.
