40-year-old British UFC veteran says he’s only ‘getting better’ after $100K Fight of the Night in Las Vegas

Davey Grant has to pinch himself constantly as he keeps winning in the UFC.

‘Dangerous’ scored his ninth UFC win this past weekend in Las Vegas, defeating debutant Adrian Luna Martinetti by unanimous decision after three rounds.

The 40-year-old from Bishop Auckland, England, put on another exciting display over the 15-minute bantamweight fight, dominating in large parts to leave his Ecuadorian opponent busted up.

Addressing the media post-fight after his win at UFC Vegas 116, where Ryan Spann scored a knockout of the year contender, Grant explained how good he is feeling despite turning 41 this year.

“Honestly, I feel great, and I still feel like I’m getting better,” Grant said.

“I’m still learning. The one thing that comes with age is experience, and you only get experience from experience.

“I’ve been in there and done it a few times. I still feel like I’m getting better, still trying to put the performances out there, and just blessed to still be living this life.

“I have to pinch myself. I feel so lucky that I’ve managed to do what I love for a living with so many people that I love.”

Grant, who was trained by Ronda Rousey in his youth, said he plans to continue learning forever to become a better coach.

He’s now living in Las Vegas and training at Syndicate MMA, but is showing no signs of slowing down.

“If you’re not moving forward, you’re moving backwards,” Grant added, having been awarded a $100,000 Fight of the Night bonus for his performance.

Speaking on his activity and the future, he continued: “I want to get back out there definitely.

“We’ll have a little bit of time — just concentrate on my coaching for a little bit and helping out the other guys in the gym before I start getting at it too hard.

“But definitely back by the end of the summer — I don’t know.

“Last year, I had four weight cuts in about 10 months, and it was a bit much.

“I don’t want to be cutting weight as often as that. It was a little bit – just maybe one too many.

“So if we can get another two in within the next 12 months, that type of thing, that’ll be about right.”

Seasoned veteran Grant made his UFC debut in 2016, having failed at his first attempt to get a contract through The Ultimate Fighter three years prior.
