India head into this year’s T20 World Cup as co-hosts and defending champions following their victory in the final against South Africa in Barbados two years ago.
The number one ranked T20I batter and bowler at the start of the tournament are both Indian, with Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakravarthy respectively holding those titles.
India have won 37 of the 43 T20Is they’ve played since winning their second T20 World Cup title in 2024, winning all nine series between the two competitions, including being crowned Asian Cup champions a year ago.
Australia are priced as the second favourites for victory despite heading into the tournament on a five-match losing streak following a 3-0 series defeat in Pakistan as well as 2-1 home defeat by India.
Despite their recent struggles, the 2021 world champions boast a star studded squad who can win big games by themselves, and such as the format of this year’s competition, starting with group games against weaker opposition can benefit teams growing into the latter stages of the tournament.
England are also among the big names looking to go all the way as they hunt for a record-breaking third World Cup title, and head into this year’s tournament in strong form having won each of their last seven games, including a 3-0 whitewash against co-hosts Sri Lanka in recent weeks.
Since the start of last summer Harry Brook’s side have lost only one of their last 11 completed T20Is, that sole defeat coming in a five-over match against South Africa in Cardiff.
England boast a settled squad that hit big and bat deep, while also containing a fiery bowling attack with several dangerous spin options and plenty of experience of playing on these subcontinental wickets in the IPL.
2024 runners up South Africa will also be expected to go deep into the tournament, while the likes of New Zealand and Pakistan can never be discounted.
Afghanistan were shock semi-finalists two years ago and arguably have a stronger squad this time around so could be serious dark horses, while co-hosts Sri Lanka have a strong record in T20I series in recent years and will be roared on by their home faithful.
Special mention must also go to Italy, who will be partaking in their first ever major ICC tournament, boasting a squad with several big names from the English and Australian domestic circuits.
The tournament will begin with a group stage of four groups of five teams, with England drawn in a group with West Indies, Nepal, Italy and Scotland, with the top two in each group progressing to the Super 8, a second group stage with two groups of four, with top two in each group reaching the semi finals.
