2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina in doubt as Qatar FA announce postponements

The 2026 Finalissima is now in doubt as military action escalates in the Middle East.

Spain and Argentina were due to clash in Qatar on March 27 as the European and South American champions compete for bragging rights.

The one-off match was due to be played in Doha but rapidly moving geopolitical developments mean the game is in serious doubt.

There has been no official statement regarding the Finalissima.

However, the Qatar Football Association has released a statement regarding the sport being played in uncertain times.

They posted on X: “The Qatar Football Association announces the postponement of all tournaments, competitions, and matches, effective from today and until further notice.

“The new dates for the resumption of competitions will be announced in due course through the Association’s official channels.”

It comes as Qatar claims they have been targeted with missiles and drones by Iran.

That was in retaliation to the American-Israeli attack on Iran.

This was due to be the fourth edition of the tournament, brought back into being by CONMEBOL and UEFA in 2022.

The inaugural match was back in 1985 as France and Uruguay contested the match in Paris, with the hosts winning 2-0.

A second edition was hosted in Argentina as the South Americans beat Denmark on penalties after a 1-1 draw in their homeland.

The match was then taken out of the calendar with the King Fahd/Confederations Cup all but replacing it.

This was then abolished by FIFA in 2019, and 12 months later, UEFA and CONMEBOL brought the Finalissima back, initially agreeing to three matches.

The first took place at Wembley as Argentina beat Italy 3-0 with Lautaro Martinez, Angel di Maria, and Paulo Dybala getting on the scoresheet.

Argentina were set to compete in the 2026 version too after their 2024 Copa America win.

Their opponents Spain earned their spot by beating England in the European Championship.

However, in a vital spot in the football calendar in a World Cup year, both holders Argentina and Spain see their plans in limbo.
