Wheeler needed multiple rehab starts before getting the call back up to the Phillies, where he then started against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night. In his final rehab game, Wheeler allowed four runs, and one of them was a home run from Lombard Jr.
Lombard Jr. will now play in Scranton, and it is only a matter of time until he gets the call to the bigs. It seems like the Yankees are the perfect team for Lombard Jr. In Double-A this season, Lombard Jr. is hitting .312 with a .971 OPS. He has hit four home runs and driven in 10 RBIs in just 20 games. He’s racked up 24 hits total with eight doubles and 12 walks. Keeping a player in that system and letting him excel is a smart plan; however, the Yankees believe he can emulate those numbers at the next level.
Defensively, Lombard Jr. can play shortstop and third base. He’s spent time at second base as well, but with Jazz Chilsholm Jr. there, it makes sense for Lombard Jr. to play third base. Anthony Volpe is working his way back from an injury, and the Yankees are still super high on him. Third base makes too much sense, and there is a legit shot at him getting the call to the Yankees at some point this season. At 20 years old, the Yankees may have their next prized superstar loading.
The Yankees recently designated Randall Grichuk for assignment.
