World Cup: Ivory Coast vs Ecuador predictions and betting tips – Dark horses to make a winning start

If you read my World Cup outrights piece you’ll know I’m a big fan of this Ecuador side, and their tournament starts with a fascinating Group E opener against Ivory Coast at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, midnight UK time on Sunday night into Monday morning.

With Germany the clear favourites to win the group, this one has the look of a straight shootout for second place, and it pits two of the best defensive records in world football against each other.

Ivory Coast didn’t concede a single goal in ten qualifiers, while Ecuador let in just five across eighteen matches in the brutal South American section. Something has to give, and I think it’s the Elephants.

Ivory Coast vs Ecuador head to head overview

Ivory Coast vs Ecuador predicted lineups

Both managers are expected to field strong sides for what already looks like a crucial game in the battle to qualify from Group D.

  • Ivory Coast expected lineup: Fofana, Doue, Singo, Diomande, Konan, Diakite, Kessie, Seko Fofana, Yan Diomande, Diallo, Adingra
  • Ecuador expected lineup: Galindez, Ordonez, Pacho, Hincapie, Minda, Alcivar, Caicedo, Anthony Valencia, Estupinan, Enner Valencia, Paez

Ivory Coast vs Ecuador predictions

Ivory Coast are back at the World Cup for the first time since 2014 and they arrive as African qualifying champions in serious form.

They went unbeaten through qualifying with eight wins and two draws, and they warmed up for the tournament with three straight friendly wins, including a 2-1 victory over France just days ago. Manchester United’s Amad Diallo leads an exciting new generation.

Ecuador, though, are built differently to anything Ivory Coast faced in qualifying. They conceded just five goals in eighteen South American qualifiers, kept thirteen clean sheets, and spent fewer than 100 minutes trailing across the entire campaign.

They finished second behind Argentina, beat the world champions 1-0 in their final qualifier and arrive unbeaten in four warm-up friendlies including draws away to the Netherlands and Morocco.

With Willian Pacho, Piero Hincapie and Moises Caicedo down the spine, they’re horrible to play against, and that’s exactly why I tipped them as dark horses in this tournament.

Ivory Coast vs Ecuador betting tips

Here are my three bets for the game.

Ecuador to edge a tight one in Philadelphia

The 7/5 on Ecuador is the bet I’ve been waiting to back since the draw was made. Their qualifying record was the best defensive return in South America and they’ve carried that form into the summer with a 3-0 win over Guatemala in their final warm-up.

Ivory Coast’s clean sheet record in qualifying is seriously impressive, but it came in CAF qualifying, and most of Ecuador’s wins are ground out by a single goal against far stronger opposition.

In a game of fine margins, I trust the side that beat the world champions to find one moment of quality, with captain Enner Valencia still the man for the big occasion.

Goals at a premium at the Linc

This is the easiest read of the whole first round of fixtures, so much so that the bookies have hammered the under 2.5 line into 5/11. I’m going a step further.

Ten clean sheets in ten qualifiers for Ivory Coast, thirteen in eighteen for Ecuador, and four of Ecuador’s final five qualifiers finished 0-0. Ecuador scored just 14 goals in their entire campaign, so even when they win, they win by a small margin.

Both managers know a defeat here probably means needing a result against Germany, so neither side will take an ounce of risk. A 1-0 Ecuador win looks a realistic outcome, and under 1.5 is the value way to go.

⚽ Bet on under 1.5 match goals at 13/10 with bet365 ⚽

Caicedo to land in the book

Moises Caicedo is the best ball-winner in the Premier League, but that aggressive style usually comes at a cost. He was sent off for two bookable offences in Ecuador’s final qualifier against Argentina, and in a midfield battle against the physicality of Franck Kessie and Seko Fofana there will be plenty of 50-50s to attack.

With an English referee in Michael Oliver taking charge and so much riding on a tight midfield contest, Caicedo picking up a yellow looks one of the more predictable outcomes in what will be a tight game.

⚽ Bet on Moises Caicedo to be carded at 13/5 with bet365 ⚽

Important historical facts about Ivory Coast and Ecuador for betting

  • This is the first ever meeting between Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
  • Ivory Coast have been knocked out at the group stage in all three of their previous World Cups, even with the golden generation of Drogba and the Toures.
  • Ecuador have reached the knockout stage just once, in 2006, when they were beaten by England in the last 16.
  • Ivory Coast did not concede a single goal in their ten qualifying matches.
  • Ecuador conceded just five goals in eighteen qualifiers and spent fewer than 100 minutes trailing across the whole campaign.
  • Ecuador beat world champions Argentina 1-0 in their final qualifier, with Enner Valencia scoring from the spot.

Two brilliant defences, one fascinating game. Don’t expect fireworks, but do expect Ecuador to quietly get the job done.
