Why Spain and Argentina match was cancelled months before World Cup?

The Finalissima football match between Spain and Argentina was cancelled in March due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The fixture is contested by the latest winners of the Copa America and the European Championship, organised by both the South American Football Confederation and UEFA.

Argentina are the defending champions of the title having defeated Euro 2020 winners Italy 3-0 at Wembley in 2022.

The clash was previously labelled the European/South American Nations Cup, however, only two matches were played before the contest was discontinued until 2022.

The 2026 edition earlier this year was meant to be between the now World Cup finalists, Spain and Argentina.

Why was it cancelled?

The event was set to take place at the Lusail Stadium near Doha, which hosted the 2022 World Cup final, won by Argentina.

The match was scheduled for March 27 but European football’s governing body held discussions with authorities in Qatar and concluded the match could not take place due to the ‘current political situation’ in the region.

In a statement released by UEFA, they said: “After much discussion between UEFA and the organising authorities in Qatar, it is announced today that due to the current political situation in the region,

“The Finalissima between UEFA EURO 2024 winners Spain and CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 champions Argentina cannot be played as hoped in Qatar on 27 March.

“It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams of the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar – a country that has demonstrated time and again its capability of staging world class international events in state-of-the-art facilities.

“UEFA would like to express its deep gratitude to the organising committee and relevant authorities of Qatar for the work that has been put into trying to host the game and its certainty that peace will return to the region soon.”

It was not the only sporting event disrupted due to the war, as Formula One cancelled April’s Grands Prix in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Additionally, MotoGP postponed this season’s Qatar Grand Prix from April to November.

What were the other options?

UEFA mentioned they explored alternative dates, yet these proved to be ‘unacceptable’ for the Argentinian Football Association (AFA).

One of the options explored was UEFA offering to host the match at Real Madrid‘s Santiago Bernabeu stadium, with a proposal to split the fan allocation in half.

A secondary option was to stage the event over two legs, home and away for each country, but the AFA rejected both.

UEFA also mentioned that the South Americans made a counter-offer to play the game after the World Cup, but Spain said they had no available dates.

The footballing body added: “As a result, and to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled.

“UEFA would like to express its sincere thanks to Real Madrid CF and the organising committee and authorities in Qatar for their support and cooperation in attempting to arrange this match.

” In the case of Real Madrid, their efforts were made at extremely short notice.

“Thanks are also expressed to the Spanish Football Federation for its flexibility to adapt to all options proposed throughout the process.”

World Cup final

Fans will essentially get a new edition of the Finalissima in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19.

Spain have emerged as the favourites to win the Jules Rimet trophy at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The defending world champions Argentina remain the underdogs, despite coming from behind to eliminate England in the semi-final.

Lionel Messi has the chance to captain his nation to back-to-back world titles.

Spain are in their first World Cup final since 2010 and have won four of the last six meetings against Argentina, though the sides have not played each other since 2018.
