Why franchise tag should be George Pickens’ last resort, per Jason McCourty

The Dallas Cowboys received immense value when they traded Day 2 and Day 3 draft picks to the Pittsburgh Steelers for wide receiver George Pickens, but that savvy move also burdened the organization with another potential contract dilemma. Now, after recording 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns last season, the Second-Team All-Pro is facing a crucial career decision.

Does he sign his $27.3 million franchise tag, or does he try to gain leverage by seeking a way out of town? Super Bowl 53 champion and current NFL analyst Jason McCourty adamantly believes Pickens should take the latter route.

“If I’m [George] Pickens, I’m having my agent explore every opportunity to get a trade going… because I want to go somewhere this offseason where I can get paid,” the retired defensive back said on ESPN’s “NFL Live.”

The Cowboys do not intend to sign Pickens to a contract extension at this time, as they try to put off the issue for at least another year. Their reluctance to make a long-term commitment is easy to understand. Although the 2022 second-round selection has always possessed an abundance of talent, questions surround his ability to consistently fulfill his potential.

Before arriving in Dallas, Pickens’ career-high numbers in catches and TDs were 63 and five, respectively. He exploded in a dynamic offense that was forced to compensate for its putrid defense. The former Georgia star also received more opportunities with CeeDee Lamb battling injuries throughout the 2025-26 campaign.

If the Cowboys’ No. 1 wideout is healthy, and their defense is markedly better as expected, then the odds of Pickens having another huge season in Dallas should drastically diminish. Those factors could explain why the 25-year-old has yet to sign the tag. He understands the situation, and he knows that this specific franchise will try to stall for as long as possible.

However, there may not even be a favorable trade market for George Pickens. Nothing has gained traction so far and there is no guarantee that teams will be willing to give up draft capital and a big chunk of change for a player who had a shaky reputation while he was on the Steelers. No. 3 could be left with only one realistic option.

But he could still follow Jason McCourty’s advice. Until Pickens puts pen to paper, speculation will run rampant in Jerry World. Heck, that will probably happen regardless.
