What Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram said after clutch Game 5 performance vs. Ducks
The Edmonton Oilers avoided elimination in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 4-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night. Goaltending has been an issue for the Oilers so far in the series, but it was not in Game 5.
Connor Ingram returned to the net for Game 5 after not playing Game 4 and was a star. He spoke to the media after the game about his temporary benching, according to Gerry Moddejonge of NHL.com.
“The communication was great, they let me know what was going on,” Ingram said. “I had no problem with it. I was frustrated after Game 3 (7-4 loss on April 24), just with myself and what was going on, so to give myself a little break mentally and physically was huge, I think.”
Ingram started the first three games and struggled in each of them. His best game of the series came in Game 1, as he stopped 25 of 28 shots in a 4-3 victory. Still, over the next two games, he would stop just 54 of 65 shots, good for a .831 save percentage. Allowing six goals in Game 3 led to him sitting out Game 4.
This led to Tristan Jarry getting the nod for Game 4. He stopped 34 of 38 shots in the game, but the Oilers took an overtime loss, dropping down 3-1 in the series, and setting up the do-or-die game on Tuesday. The team then went back to Ingram, who stepped up in a big way. He stopped 29 of 30 shots in the victory, staving off elimination.
Now, the team will need another clutch performance from their netminder, as they face elimination again in Game 6. That game is set for Thursday night with a 10 p.m. ET puck drop.
