What Astros superstar Yordan Alvarez said about historic night vs. Royals

The Houston Astros watched Yordan Alvarez turn Friday night into a historic showcase at Kauffman Stadium. Alvarez homered twice in the first inning of a wild 10-8 win vs. the Kansas City Royals, giving the Astros a loud start to the three-game weekend series.

Alvarez made MLB history by hitting both a multi-run homer and a grand slam in the same first inning. No player had ever done that before, and the Astros created the chance by batting around immediately vs. the Royals.

The first swing came off Luinder Avila as the Astros jumped ahead early. Later in the inning, Alvarez returned to the plate with the bases full and another chance to punish a Royals staff that could not escape the opening frame.

In an article written by MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart and published on the league’s website, McTaggart captured the reaction from the 28-year-old slugger when he realized history was within reach.

“Once I hit the first one and I got the chance to hit for a second time, it went through my mind.”

That response made the night feel even more impressive. The 2019 AL Rookie of the Year did not stumble into the moment. Alvarez understood what stood in front of him, then delivered the swing that made it real.

The second homer came with two outs against Mason Black. Alvarez launched the grand slam and completed a six-RBI inning that powered Houston’s early eruption.

The performance also strengthened his AL MVP case. He pushed his season total to 24 home runs, tying slugger Kyle Schwarber for the MLB lead. He also recorded his 25th career multi-homer game, matching Lance Berkman in Astros history.

The three-time MLB All-Star continues to move closer to franchise territory as well. At his current pace, Alvarez could challenge Jeff Bagwell’s single-season club record of 47 home runs, set in 2000.

For Houston, the night showed both star power and lineup depth. For Alvarez, it was a historic reminder that one swing can change a game, and his bat can do even more.
