Watch Qatar stun Switzerland with a late goal to secure first World Cup point
For more than 90 minutes of action at Levi’s Stadium, Switzerland was on the front foot against Qatar.
But in stoppage time, a thunderous header from Boualem Khoukhi pulled Qatar level, and gave his nation its first World Cup point when the final whistle blew.
Shocking Switzerland in the process.
The Swiss were in control of the match for most of the afternoon, creating several scoring chances. Breel Embolo’s penalty in the 17th minute gave Switzerland the early 1-0 lead, and it felt like a second goal was inevitable.
But that goal never came, thanks in large part to a tremendous performance from Qatar keeper Mahmoud Abunada. The keeper turned aside several dangerous scoring chances, keeping his side in the match despite Switzerland enjoying the run of play.
Then came final moments of the match, when it seemed Switzerland’s inability to find that second goal was going to come back to bite them. Qatar created a few scoring threats in the closing minutes, including one twisting effort from striker Ahmed Alaaeldin that was easily saved.
Then came a moment that will live in lore for Qatar:
A lovely ball into the box from Homam Ahmed, and Khoukhi heads home for the equalizer that was heard throughout the soccer world.
After the celebrations subsided, Qatar denied one final scoring threat, and a fresh celebration was on:
Qatar made its World Cup debut in 2022 as the host nation, losing all three of its group stage matches and scoring just one goal.
Already in 2026 they have matched that goal output, and now they have their first World Cup point. As things stand, all four teams in Group B have one point, thanks to a 1-1 draw between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina yesterday.
Up next for Qatar, a match with host nation Canada on Thursday, June 18.
