The first major of the snooker season got underway on Saturday afternoon and sees 32 of the best players from around the world compete for one of the triple crown events at the Barbican in York.
Ronnie O’Sullivan is the competition’s most successful player having won the tournament on eight different occasions, most recently in 2023, 30 years after lifting the trophy for the first time.
This week’s tournament will be the first time O’Sullivan has played competitive in England since his defeat to eventual champion Zhao Xintong in the semi final of the World Championships back in May.
The 49-year-old gets his UK Championship underway on Tuesday afternoon against the qualifier Zhou Yuelong.
World number one Judd Trump heads into this year’s edition as defending champion following his victory over Barry Hawkins in last year’s final, and has already booked his place in the last 16 following his win over Stephen Maguire on Saturday afternoon.
Current world champion Zhao, the first ever world champion from China, makes the trip to York as second seed and has already booked his ticket to the next round following a routine victory over compatriot Long Zehuang in round one.
Other members of the so called ‘Class of 92’, John Higgins and Mark Williams, three-time and two-time champion respectively, have both rolled back the years by securing their place in the last 16, with respective first round wins over Ben Woollaston and David Gilbert.
World number two Kyren Wilson gets his tournament underway against Elliot Slessor as the 2024 world champions looks for UK Championship glory for the first time, while world number three and three-time champion Neil Robertson is safely through to round two.
