Keys to Timberwolves vs. Nuggets Matchup
Game 1 of this series saw a familiar script as Nikola Jokic posted a 25p/13r/11a triple-double en route to another Nuggets’ win. Against the Timberwolves this season, Jokic is averaging an impressive 35.3 PPG, 15.0 RPG, and 11.3 APG so fully expect him to be hovering around similar numbers during this Game 2 effort. Jamal Murray was the biggest catalyst for their scoring efforts as his 30 points (16-16 FT) made all the difference in putting them over the top and covering the spread in Game 1.
Anthony Edwards posted a cool 22 point and 7 assists to lead his team in both statistics, but it was clear he didn’t look like his usual self playing on a compromised knee. Their bench combined for just 22 points as both Jaden McDaniels and Julius Randle combined for 0-7 on their attempts from three. The Timberwolves have lived and died by the three all season, so expect them to continue leaning on it knowing they can steal a game on their road if they see their shots falling down.
The Nuggets will still have the noticeable advantage and they’ve been effective in covering the spread at home this season. They’ve been even more consistent in covering the spread against this Timberwolves team in particular, matching up well with their size and ability to rebound the ball opposite Naz Reid and Rudy Gobert. The Nuggets are also the much better team in transition and on creating buckets off turnovers, so expect their defense to play a huge role in their success once again.
While both teams ranked top-seven in the NBA’s highest-scoring teams, the Nuggets led the league at 122.1 PPG despite failing to rank as a top-10 defense. The Timberwolves ranked eighth overall in net defensive rating, but it seems as though the Denver defense has gotten the better of Minnesota throughout their meetings this season.
Timberwolves vs. Nuggets Prediction and Pick
The Denver Nuggets carry a ton of momentum and confidence into this Game 2 knowing they’ve had success against the Timberwolves all season, especially on their home floor. This time around, we can expect to see much of the same from Nikola Jokic and company as the Denver Nuggets should be in prime position to win this game. Jamal Murray is quietly having a career season and his ability to lock-in during this playoffs will put the Nuggets over in this series.
For Game 2, let’s roll with the Denver Nuggets to cover the spread once again as they should be able to lead the rebounding totals and win behind another Jokic triple-double.
Final Timberwolves-Nuggets Game 2 Prediction & Pick: Denver Nuggets -7.5 (-105); OVER 230.5 (-110)
