Timberwolves rumors: Minnesota to make ‘significant roster change’ this offseason

The Minnesota Timberwolves were defeated in the Western Conference semifinals by the San Antonio Spurs in six games despite the continued consistent brilliance of star man Anthony Edwards. The 24-year-old can be expected to enter his prime in the coming seasons, and Minnesota still looked comprehensive way away from actually competing for the championship last season.

And as things stand, all signs point towards a major shakeup before next season tips off. Per NBA Insider Jon Krawczynski, the Timberwolves are likely to make significant roster change this offseason, and are likely to have a starkly different lineup for the 2026-27 season.

“What I think is going to happen is I do think there’s going to be some sort of fairly significant roster change so that the starting lineup on opening night next season is not going to be the same starting lineup that finished this season,” he said.

That is exactly what multiple sources have reported over the last few weeks. The Timberwolves have been linked to multiple superstars, from Kyrie Irving to Giannis Antetokounmpo, as they look to fast-track to ‘win-now’ mode with ANT at the helm.

The urgency behind Minnesota’s offseason plans appears tied directly to Edwards’ long-term satisfaction with the roster. He was the major reason why the series against the Spurs even lasted six games, with the four-time All-Star averaging 28.8 points, five rebounds and 3.7 assists in 61 games last campaign. Regardless, as things stand, Krawczynski identified Irving as a more attainable possibility than Giannis, with reports suggesting Minnesota have already checked in with the Mavericks.

The Giannis sweepstakes remain considerably more complicated for Minnesota. The Timberwolves were understood to be considering a package involving Jaden McDaniels, but later backed out, with his fit alongside Edwards understood to be a reason. Regardless, multiple superstars are expected to switch teams this offseason, and the Timberwolves do have the assets to make a major splash, which means they may as well get the opportunity to snag another superstar, this window.
