Tigers’ Javier Baez exits Braves game with apparent leg injury
The Detroit Tigers have been dealt a pair of brutal injuries in Tuesday’s matchup with the Atlanta Braves. First, starting pitcher Casey Mize left the game with left groin tightness. Then, a grizzly scene played on with Detroit on offense. Tigers centerfielder Javier Baez was carted off the field with an apparent leg injury after a slide into 1st base.

Baez hit a groundball to shortstop with no one out in the fifth inning on Tuesday night. After Mauricio Dubon delivered a high throw from short, Baez tried to duck underneath it and slide into first base. Matt Olson made the play, and Baez remained down after the play. He was carted off the field and replaced in the lineup by Wencel Perez.
Baez revived his career in the first half last year, earning an All-Star bid with a .752 OPS at the break. But he collapsed down the stretch, posting a .548 OPS in the final 47 games, bringing his season mark down to .680. This season has not been much better, as he has just seven extra-base hits in 23 games to start the year.
The Tigers are already owners of a five-game losing streak and a six-game winning streak this season. Just a month in, they have proven to be an up-and-down operation without an elite offensive level. Even Kevin McGonigle’s excellent start has not elevated their offense to a championship level. Any hope for Baez bringing them there likely died long ago, but a long-term injury is not going to help, either.
ClutchPoints will have the latest on the Javier Baez injury and everything from a wild Tigers-Braves matchup on Tuesday in Atlanta.
