Tigers’ AJ Hinch gives Gleyber Torres injury update before Rangers game

The Detroit Tigers have been off to an okay start to the 2026 MLB season, as their 18-17 start has them tied for first place in the AL Central standings. On Sunday night, the Tigers were dominant in their win that brought them over the .500 mark, as they crushed the Texas Rangers, 7-1, in the game that sealed the weekend series victory in their favor.

What makes this all the more impressive is that the Tigers were without starting second baseman Gleyber Torres, who exited Detroit’s 5-1 win over Texas on Saturday in the fourth inning due to side tightness. It’s not quite clear how long Torres will be on the sidelines. But the 29-year-old could be back as soon as Monday night when they take on the Boston Red Sox in another home series.

As mentioned by Tigers manager AJ Hinch prior to their 7-1 win over the Rangers on Sunday, Torres is currently “day to day” and that his test results on the night were “encouraging”, as per Evan Woodberry of MLive Media Group.

With Torres on the mend, the Tigers looked towards Hao-Yu Lee to fill in at second base. Lee went hitless on Saturday, but he did get one hit and one RBI on Sunday in his start in place of Torres.

Getting Torres healthy will be of paramount importance for the Tigers. As one would recall, the 29-year-old played through hernia last season and saw his performance fall off a cliff. This injury history of his means that Detroit may not bring him back unless he’s fully recovered.

On the season, Torres has been productive for the Tigers. He’s posting an OPS of .717, but his ability to get on base (.389 OBP) courtesy of a higher walk rate than strikeout rate (17.4 percent to 15.3 percent) makes him a valuable member of the lineup all the same.
