This insane Spurs NBA Finals stat doesn’t look good for Knicks’ Game 1 hopes

The San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks are ready to party like it’s 1999. They will begin the NBA Finals on Wednesday in San Antonio, a rematch of the 1999 Finals in which the Spurs won in five.

Obviously, everyone has their own take on who will win, often using arbitrary statistics to make the case for either side. But there is one statistic that the Spurs have going for them, per the NBA on ESPN.

San Antonio has never lost a Game 1 in their Finals history.

In 1999, San Antonio played in their first NBA Finals against the 8th-seeded Knicks. They won the game 89-77, led by David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Sean Elliott, and Mario Ellie. The Knicks, featuring Latrell Sprewell, Allen Houston, Chris Childs, and Marcus Camby, won Game 3 89-81 at Madison Square Garden.

In Game 1 of the 2003 Finals, San Antonio defeated the New Jersey Nets 101-89. They went on to win their second NBA title in six games.

The Spurs won Game 1 of the 2005 NBA Finals against the Detroit Pistons 84-69. They won the series in seven games. In 2014, the Spurs won Game 1 110-95 over the Miami Heat, eventually winning their 5th NBA title in five games.

Altogether, San Antonio is 6-0 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Additionally, all of those victories were at home in San Antonio.

So the Spurs have history and home-court advantage on their side heading into what is already shaping up to be a highly anticipated NBA Finals.

Most have the Spurs listed as the favorite to win their 6th NBA title.
