The Deandre Ayton ‘DominAyton’ silver lining from Lakers’ last 2 losses to Rockets
The Los Angeles Lakers may be facing mounting pressure after consecutive losses to the Houston Rockets, but Deandre Ayton has emerged as a clear bright spot during a difficult stretch.
Despite a 99-93 defeat in Game 5 that trimmed the Lakers’ series lead to 3-2, Ayton delivered one of his most impactful performances of the postseason. The veteran center finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds — including 10 offensive boards — along with two blocks while shooting 9-for-14 from the field across 38 minutes.
According to StatMuse, Ayton became the first player since Pau Gasol in 2010 to record at least 15 points, 10 offensive rebounds and two blocks in a playoff game, underscoring the significance of his effort on both ends of the floor.
Over the Lakers’ last two losses, Ayton has combined for 37 points and 27 rebounds. He is averaging 18.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and one block while shooting an efficient 69.2 percent from the field in 31.8 minutes per game during that span. His activity on the glass, particularly on the offensive end, has provided second-chance opportunities and helped stabilize the Lakers’ interior presence.
Following Game 5, Ayton spoke with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin about his approach and mindset as the series intensifies.
“I’m getting ready to do it again and be consistent… This is the postseason and there’s really no slacking at all. Just showing effort and showing up for the playoffs, you know. To me it feels like every game we’re going home, that’s how every game feels. For me, I’m on a whole different mission as well, not only winning games for the Lakers but just trying to change the whole narrative for who I am. I’m trying to put this display on that I love this game and that I am a two-way player.”

Deandre Ayton’s ‘DominAyton’ resurgence offers Lakers hope heading into Game 6
Ayton’s recent stretch has resembled the form that once earned him the “DominAyton” nickname, particularly through his physicality, rim protection and efficiency around the basket. While the Lakers have struggled to close out the series, his presence has remained consistent amid fluctuating performances elsewhere in the rotation.
Los Angeles will have another opportunity to secure the series in Game 6 on Friday night at the Toyota Center, with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m. PT on Prime Video. A win would allow the Lakers to advance and avoid becoming part of a historic 3-0 series collapse.
As the pressure builds, Ayton’s resurgence stands out as a potential stabilizing factor. Whether that momentum can translate into a closeout victory remains the key question as the Lakers look to regain control of the series.
