There are no playoff places at stake when the Dallas Cowboys visit the Washington Commanders to kick off the NFL’s Christmas Day triple bill but the NFC East pair can still serve up a cracker of a contest.
The Cowboys (6-8-1) have lost three in a row to end their hopes of qualifying for the post-season, while the Commanders (4-11) have been beaten in nine of their last 10 games.
There is still pride to play for between the divisional rivals at Northwest Stadium, and the hosts will also want to gain revenge for their 44-22 loss on their trip to Texas in Week 7.

Cowboys can snap out of slump
Dallas have not had the end to the season they would have wanted, slipping tamely out of the NFC playoff picture with consecutive losses to the Detroit Lions (44-30), Minnesota Vikings (34-26) and the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday (34-17).
While their defence has relapsed again to the sloppy standards of the first part of the campaign since a brief mid-season revival, the Dallas offence is at least still operating at a high level with wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens both already over 1,000 receiving yards for the season, while running back Javonte Williams has had an excellent first year with the team after leaving the Broncos.
Quarterback Dak Prescott has thrown 28 TD passes this season and will be hopeful of adding several more against a susceptible Washington defence.
The Commanders beat fellow strugglers the New York Giants two weeks ago to halt a terrible eight-game losing run but they came up short again when facing Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles, losing 29-18 on Sunday.
Second-string QB Marcus Mariota has been playing after an injury to starter Jayden Daniels, but he is now dealing with stitches in his throwing arm and a quad injury, with third-choice Josh Johnson on standby to start. The Cowboys should be able to take advantage and register a comfortable win.
Defences set to struggle
There may be no playoff tension to unwrap on Christmas Day but NFL fans could be treated to a healthy delivery of points when the Cowboys take on the Commanders.
The Cowboys rank 30th in the league with 380.1 yards allowed per game, while the Commanders are 31st with 382.7. In terms of points allowed, the Commanders are slightly better off at 26.9, while the Cowboys are 31st at 30.3 points conceded per game.
The Cowboys rank far higher offensively, at fifth in the NFL with 28.3 points per game while their hosts are 24th at 20.6 per outing, which should give them the edge overall.
The total might not reach the 66 points the teams combined for in their first encounter, but another healthy total with at least 52 looks possible.
Lamb can roast Commanders’ cornerbacks
The Cowboys’ offensive stars have continued to deliver despite a lack of support from their defence and top wide receiver CeeDee Lamb can be fancied to reach the end zone against the Commanders.
Lamb has had three 100-yard games in his last four appearances and he scored a touchdown in the first contest between the teams this season, with a huge 74-yard score in a 110-yard performance.
With the Commanders defence ranking only 26th in the league at defending the pass, Lamb should be in business again.
