Swansea City end 32-year wait with last-gasp victory over Welsh rivals Wrexham

Wrexham’s woes continued as their 32-year unbeaten run against Swansea City came to a dramatic end.

Phil Parkinson’s side surrendered a half-time lead in Friday night’s all-Welsh Championship affair.

The Red Dragons took the lead after just 14 minutes thanks to an own goal from Cameron Burgess.

It is the third own goal the Australian defender has scored this season.

Despite leading at the break, Wrexham failed to register a shot on target during the first half.

Although they would threaten the hosts’ goal following the interval, Swansea would level the match.

Zan Vipotnik grabbed his ninth league goal of the season to pull Vitor Matos’ side level.

It looked as if the forward’s equaliser would be enough for a point before the Swans snatched all three in stoppage time.

Adam Idah capitalised on a calamitous error from goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo to prod home on the goal-line.

The Wrexham stopper had punched a free-kick into the air before failing to claim the ball as it was put back into the box.

It means the visitors have now failed to win any of their last five league matches.

Parkinson last saw his side taste victory at home to Bristol City on November 26.

Wrexham had not lost to their Welsh rivals for over 32 years ahead of their trip to south Wales on Friday.

Prior to their win, Swansea’s last victory in the fixture came back in August 1993, when they claimed a 3-1 home triumph.

The two sides have now met 10 times since, with Wrexham winning seven of those.

Prior to the unbeaten streak, the Red Dragons had won just one of their previous eight meetings with Swansea.

Their clash on Friday was the first for over two decades, though, having been as far as four divisions apart in that time.

On that occasion, they played out a goalless draw at Swansea’s old home, Vetch Field, in March 2003.

In the 22 years since, the Swans have won the League Cup, played in the Europa League and spent seven years in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Wrexham were in non-league for 15 seasons before three consecutive promotions sealed their return to the second tier in April.

Their defeat to Swansea leaves the newly-promoted side nine points clear of the relegation zone ahead of the rest of the weekend’s action.

As it stands, Wrexham sit just two points above their latest opponents.

Parkinson will now turn his attention to a Boxing Day clash with Sheffield United.

The Blades visit the Racecourse Ground on December 26, with kick-off at 5.30pm, live on talkSPORT 2.

As for Swansea, who are up to 17th in the table, they travel to league leaders Coventry City next.
