Steve McClaren set for surprise talks with relegated EFL club

Steve McClaren could be set for a surprise return to English football.

The 64-year-old has reportedly been scheduled for talks with Rotherham United this week.

McClaren was due to meet with Millers chairman Tony Stewart on Tuesday, the Rotherham Advertiser reports.

However, he could be set for a role higher up than first-team manager.

Lee Clark is currently in charge at the New York Stadium after taking over in March on a deal until the end of the season.

He has been unable to save the club from relegation from League One, though.

Rotherham’s fate was sealed with a 3-0 loss at Wigan Athletic on April 14.

The defeat means the Millers will play in League Two next term for the first time since 2013.

Clark’s side currently sit 23rd in the third-tier ahead of their final day trip to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

It has yet to be confirmed whether Clark will remain in charge beyond the summer.

McClaren return

McClaren has been away from the dugout since leaving his role as Jamaica manager in November.

Meanwhile, the former England boss last worked in the Football League at Derby County.

Across a two-year spell with the Rams, he served as both technical director and an advisor.

However, McClaren has not managed an EFL club since leaving Queens Park Rangers in 2019.

Across his 34-year managerial career, he has yet to take charge of a club below the Championship in England.

His previous spells at Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest, Derby and Newcastle United have been in the Premier League and Championship.

Meanwhile, McClaren has also managed in the Netherlands and Germany with Twente and Wolfsburg, respectively.

As well as winning a league title with Twente, McClaren lifted the League Cup with Boro in 2004.

A 16-month tenure with the Jamaican national team marked a return to international football following his appointment in July 2024.

It followed a disastrous reign in charge of the Three Lions, which ended after failing to qualify for Euro 2008.
