Sri Lanka appoint Vikram Rathour as batting coach ahead of T20 World Cup 2026
In a significant development, Sri Lanka Cricket have taken a major step in strengthening their preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026 by appointing former India batting coach Vikram Rathour as the national team’s new batting coach. Sri Lanka, who will co-host the marquee tournament, are aiming to lift the T20 World Cup trophy for the second time, having last won it in 2014.
Rathour brings vast international experience, having served as India’s batting coach under Rahul Dravid. He was part of the support staff that guided India to their T20 World Cup triumph in 2024. Rathour is expected to join the Sri Lankan setup on January 15, with the team already beginning its build-up for the tournament.
Sri Lanka have named an 18-member squad for the three-match T20I series against Pakistan, starting January 7. Charith Asalanka has returned to the T20 squad, while Dasun Shanaka will take over the captaincy duties. Shanaka will lead the side from the three-match series against Pakistan. Asalanka has been relieved of leadership duties to ease pressure and allow him to focus on his batting.
The Pakistan series forms a key part of Sri Lanka’s preparation, providing valuable match practice ahead of the T20 World Cup. As co-hosts, Sri Lanka will begin their campaign against Ireland on February 8, followed by matches against Oman, Australia, and Zimbabwe.
Rathour was appointed India’s batting coach in 2019, with his contract extended until 2024. During his tenure, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. After departing the national setup in 2024, he also served as batting coach and assistant coach for Rajasthan Royals during the IPL 2025 season.
In addition to Rathour’s appointment, Sri Lanka Cricket have welcomed back legendary fast bowler Lasith Malinga into the support staff. Malinga has been appointed as fast bowling consultant on a short-term basis, with the board confirming on December 30 that he will serve in the role for 40 days, effective from December 15.
