Spike Lee finally gets NBA title after becoming season ticket holder for Patrick Ewing’s first game

After 53 years, Spike Lee finally saw the New York Knicks win an NBA championship.

The decorated director is a diehard Knicks fan, and after the New York team beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 on June 13, the Knicks clinched the NBA championship. Lee has been a fan his whole life, as his father would take him to games, but it wasn’t until 1985 — more than a decade since the Knicks won in 1970 and 1973 — that he became a season ticket holder. His first game with his new status was seeing Knicks legend Patrick Ewing’s debut. The Knicks icon would play in the NBA for 17 seasons, with 15 of them being with the Knicks from 1985 to 2000. He would also later do a season with the Seattle SuperSonics and then the Orlando Magic in 2001 before retiring from the sport. Ewing was a part of the 1999 team that made it to the NBA Finals but lost to the Spurs 4-1.

Lee, of course, was in the building at Frost Center Bank in San Antonio to see the Knicks win the title, and in a video on X, the Oscar-winning director is seen hugging fellow fans in excitement for the historic win.

During the playoff season, Lee supported the Knicks at home in Madison Square Garden and also on the road to Philadelphia when the Knicks faced the 76ers, Atlanta to beat the Hawks, Cincinnati for the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Games 1 and 5 of the NBA Finals in San Antonio to win against the Spurs.

This is the Knick’s third franchise win after previously winning a title in 1970 and 1973. Lee who has been very active with Knicks fans throughout the season will have the opportunity to celebrate the historic accomplishment at the Knicks parade on Thursday, June 18. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the parade shortly after the Knicks’ win.
