South Carolina State cancels Pamala Evette’s commencement speech
Following protests from students and alumni, South Carolina State has canceled the commencement address of Lt. Governor Pamela Evette. University president Alxander Conyers confirmed the cancellation in a statement to media obtained by ABC News 4.
“Out of an abundance of caution for safety and with careful consideration, the university has decided to move in a different direction for this Spring Commencement. We will welcome Lt. Gov. Evette to our campus to engage with our students, faculty and staff in a constructive manner at a later date outside the celebratory nature of commencement.”
Conyers also commended the students’ protest on campus.
“Our students have exercised their rights in a manner that reflects the importance of civic engagement and respectful discourse within a university community. South Carolina State University remains committed to maintaining an environment where individuals are able to express their views peacefully and respectfully while upholding the standards and values of the institution.”
Evette responded to the cancellation on her X acccount, saying, “The fact that a speech had to be canceled for credible safety threats is exactly why we cannot give up the fight to end indoctrination and DEI on campuses once and for all. The root problem is professors who gin up feigned outrage at the detriment of their students, who they should be teaching to think critically. End tenure now!”
Earlier this week, students at South Carolina State University organized demonstrations opposing the decision to name Pamela Evette as the spring commencement speaker. According to reports from WLTX News 19, protests began on campus Tuesday, while a Change.org petition calling for her removal quickly gathered tens of thousands of signatures.
Evette addressed the backlash later that evening in a video shared on her social media platforms.
“While I was at the White House today, I heard about what’s happening on the campus of SC State University. Let’s be clear: facts trump feelings in the real world. President Trump and conservatives have done more for HBCUs than any administration in history. I must be doing something right because woke mobs are coming after me for being a champion of eliminating radical DEI scams on college campuses. So bring it on.”
