Serie A club release health update after player collapsed during game

Lecce have provided fans with a health update after Lameck Banda collapsed during their match against Napoli on Saturday.

The winger was treated on the pitch after collapsing with four minutes remaining in the Serie A clash.

His side had been trailing 2-1 when they won a free-kick in an attacking position late on.

However, before the set-piece could be taken, Banda fell to the floor in worrying scenes at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Medical staff immediately rushed onto the pitch to provide treatment.

After several minutes, Banda was taken off the field of play on a buggy and put straight into an ambulance.

It was later announced inside the stadium that he was conscious and responsive, which was met with a standing ovation from supporters.

Meanwhile, the Zambian international was taken to hospital for tests.

Lecce statement

Lecce have now released a statement confirming Banda has been released from hospital.

The club said: “Footballer Lameck Banda was discharged this morning from Cardarelli Hospital after a series of tests that yielded negative results.”

It is unclear whether he will re-join the squad ahead of the remainder of the campaign.

Lecce are due to return to action away to Roma on Sunday before the international break.

They currently sit three points above the relegation zone in 16th after their away defeat to Napoli.

The match ended 2-1 after restarting once Banda had been safely taken off the pitch.

Leece had taken an early lead thanks to Jamil Siebert’s third minute strike.

However, Rasmus Hojlund scored seconds into the second half to level the match.

Matteo Politano then grabbed what proved to be the winner to keep Napoli within nine points of leaders Inter Milan.

Banda joined Lecce in 2022 following their promotion to Serie A.

His current deal is set to expire at the end of this season following four years with the club.

The 25-year-old has scored three goals and provided three assists in 23 league appearances this term.
