Royals’ Jonathan India to miss rest of season after undergoing surgery
The Kansas City Royals were dealt gut-wrenching news on Tuesday when it was announced that Jonathan India would miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.
“Jonathan India had labral repair surgery today. He’ll be out for the rest of the season.”
The Royals put India on the 10-day IL last week, and it is now confirmed that he will eventually be moved to the 60-day IL as his season is over. The former NL Rookie of the Year for the Cincinnati Reds is an above-average hitter in the league with the ability to play multiple positions in the infield. Playing alongside Bobby Witt Jr, India posted a slash line of just .167/.310/.313. He was not having a great hitting season this year, compared to years in the past.
India’s play has declined since his rookie season. He has yet to reach 20 home runs after hitting 21 in 2021. Last season, in his first year playing for the Royals, India hit just nine homers and drove in only 45 runs. He hit just .233 with an OPS at .669. Coming off a full offseason with the team, it was expected that India would make a major leap back toward the play that he showcased in 2021. In 17 games this season, India has smashed two home runs with eight RBIs. Even though his average was bad, there was a small hope that he could figure things out.
India and the Royals will have to wait until next spring in order to see if India will remain a part of the team’s plans moving forward.
