Rockies to receive Kyle Freeland boost for Reds clash

Coming off of their sweep of the New York Mets, the Colorado Rockies are now gearing up for a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds. The Rockies will get some pitching reinforcements as that series begins.

Colorado has activated Kyle Freeland off the injured list and he will start on Tuesday, the team announced. Freeland had been on the injured list with shoulder inflammation after being scratched from a start.

He was able to progress to bullpen sessions and simulated games by late April. The Rockies will be paying close attention to their Opening Day starter and his shoulder. But Freeland now appears past the concern and ready to return to the mound.

Over his first three starts in 2026, the left-hander holds a 2.30 ERA and a 13/4 K/BB ratio. In his most recent outing, a 5-1 win over the Houston Astros, Freeland pitched 6.1 innings of one-run baseball, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five.

Finding quality starting pitching has been the Rockies’ biggest struggle since their existence. While it hasn’t always been pretty, the lefty holds a career 4.51 ERA and a 957/396 K/BB ratio. Freeland has been a key pitcher for Colorado since his arrival in 2017.

Now 33-years-old, it’s difficult seeing the left-hander still apart of the Rockies’ rotation when they are ready to truly compete, barring an unforeseen turnaround. Still, Freeland has now been with the team for 10 years, his name is etched in team lore forever.

He’ll have an opportunity to build on that legacy on Tuesday. The Rockies have all the momentum after sweeping the Mets. An opening series win against the Reds would make Colorado’s run even more impressive.
