Rockets vs. Lakers 2026 NBA Playoffs Game 5 prediction, odds, pick

We’re back with another prediction and pick for the 2026 NBA Playoffs as we head to the Western Conference for this upcoming Game 5 showdown. The Houston Rockets look to avoid elimination on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers, leading 3-1 in this series. Check our NBA Playoffs odds series for the Rockets-Lakers prediction and pick.

The Houston Rockets managed their first win of this series in Game 4, beating the Lakers 115-96 on their home floor to avoid the First Round sweep. Kevin Durant (ankle) remained out for the Rockets and as this series shifts back to Los Angeles, Durant will miss Game 5 as well with his team in a must-win situation.

The Lakers look for their first conference semifinals in three years and with Luka Doncic still on the mend, securing a series win in five games would give them crucial rest and preparation ahead of a series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, already awaiting the winner of this tilt.

Keys to Rockets vs. Lakers Matchup

Facing elimination at home, the Rockets’ starters took initiative at home and all scored 16 or more points in a collective effort. Amen Thompson led the way with 23 points as Reed Sheppard (17 pts) went 4-7 on his attempts from three. The Rockets bench also contributed with 20 points, but it was even more interesting to see just 19 total team assists in a 48% shooting night with a ton of isolation and transition baskets. The Rockets also went 25-31 from the free throw line, maximizing their chances against the defense and earning opportunities at the line.

While the Lakers shot a stellar 50% from the field in Game 4, they also had 23 total turnovers, more than their 17 made attempts at the line. They clearly didn’t remain diligent in taking care of the basketball up 3-0, to which Houston made them pay for the lax defense and lazy passing. Expect a more polished performance out of the Lakers as LeBron James takes command of the offense with his facilitating and they try to get Luke Kennard hot from three. He went 8-11 from deep through the first two games at home, but answered by going 1-9 in two games from Houston. Expect Kennard to find his groove once again in Game 5.

With the continued absence of Kevin Durant seriously hurting the Rockets, Alperen Sengun will have to step up with a dominant game if the Rockets want to have a shot in this one. He’s very good in banging the ball down low and disrupting the paint, so expect him to be aggressive in his looks early as he tries to establish his team at the free throw line once again. Jabari Smith Jr. has also been integral to their scoring and rebounding down low, so expect a much better offensive night after he went 26.7% FG during the win.

The Lakers were able to hold the Rockets to under 100 points in the first two games from Los Angeles, Marcus Smart making huge contributions with two blocks in Game 1 and five steals in Game 2. The Lakers also lead the NBA Playoffs in FG% (50.9), so expect them to continue making strong decisions while capitalizing on their defensive stops.

Rockets vs. Lakers Prediction and Pick

The Lakers been one of the league’s most consistent teams at home throughout this season and with LeBron James staring down a close-out game at home, there’s no surprise that the Lakers come into this game as the favorites. While the Rockets were able to notch a victory in Game 4 without Kevin Durant thanks to an overall team effort, it seems as though the Lakers were only waiting for their chance to head back home to close this series out with a gentleman’s sweep.

I don’t expect the Rockets to put up much of a fight down the stretch in this game as Los Angeles’ home momentum may be too great. This is also the first game of the series where they’ve been favored, so expect them to continue their success as LeBron James leads them to victory.

Final Rockets-Lakers Game 5 Prediction & Pick: Los Angeles Lakers -4.5 (-105); OVER 208.5 (-108)
