Reds’ Eugenio Suarez injury update revealed ahead of Rockies game

As the Cincinnati Reds put star Eugenio Suarez on the injured list (IL) with an oblique issue, there has been a new update from manager Terry Francona about the 34-year-old. With the Reds currently facing the Colorado Rockies in a three-game series, winning 7-2 on Tuesday, the hope is that Suarez can come back sooner rather than later.

According to Charlie Goldsmith, Francona would give insight into the oblique injury, saying that it is “still a bit tender,” and that the hope coming up is that he gets better to where he “can get scanned on this upcoming road trip.”

“Terry Francona said Eugenio Suarez’s oblique is still a bit tender. The hope is he progresses to the point where he can get scanned on this upcoming road trip and then really ramp up baseball activities,” Goldsmith wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Suarez sustained the oblique injury during a batting practice session Friday, and Cincinnati would come up with the decision to put him on the IL on Saturday.

“He didn’t think it was anything,” Francona said, according to Dayton Daily News. “We said, let’s get you looked at. The doc saw him. He went and got an MRI. He has a low-grade oblique. The hope is that after possibly five or six days, if symptoms are gone, we’ll get him imaged again and start to build him back up.”

While Suarez has been a go-to option for the Reds at designated hitter, his absence has led to more starts for 30-year-old Nathaniel Lowe, who has been on a hot streak recently. So far, Lowe has recorded a .277 batting average to go along with four home runs and 11 RBIs.

“The ball isn’t flying exactly the way I want it to yet,” Lowe said. “That’ll come with getting in a rhythm with more at-bats. I’m getting the ball in the air without trying to get the ball in the air. If you do something simple like that, good things are going to happen.”

It remains to be seen when Suarez comes back to Cincinnati.
