Rangers approach Premier League club for double transfer raid as Danny Rohl targets title charge

Rangers have reportedly made enquiries to Sunderland for duo Dan Neil and Romaine Mundle.

Despite playing a key role in the Black Cats‘ promotion to the Premier League last season, the pair have seen their playing time limited this term.

Academy graduate Neil captained his hometown club in their Play-Off Final win over Sheffield United at Wembley in May.

However, he has only featured three times in the top-flight in the 2025/26 campaign, having been replaced by Granit Xhaka in the Sunderland midfield.

Meanwhile, after a breakthrough year in the Championship last season, winger Mundle is yet to start in the top-flight this term.

Sky Sports report that the 22-year-old is keen for more regular game time, with Sunderland open to allowing him to leave on loan this month.

As for Neil, he is said to be on the radar of some Championship clubs, and is out of contract in the summer.

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris appeared to suggest both players could be allowed to leave in January.

When asked about the prospect of Mundle leaving, he said: “If a player won’t play too much in the second part of the season, there is the possibility for him to find another club to get minutes.”

Rangers alert to Sunderland duo

It appears Rangers are alert to Neil and Mundle’s situations, with head coach Danny Rohl prioritising recruitment in January.

After a disastrous start to the season under Russell Martin, Rohl’s arrival in October has inspired a revival at Ibrox, with the Gers now just three points off leaders Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.

The German has his sights set on further progress, as revealed his side are looking to add more firepower in a recent press conference.

Rangers have already shown their intent by agreeing deals for Westerlo left-back Tuur Rommens and Sturm Graz midfielder Tochi Chukwuani.

Speaking on Friday, Rohl said: “Yeah, I think for me it’s not just about the No.9. I think in general we have to increase our goals

“And I think this is an important thing we can find on the market. We are looking at some other positions as well.

“But let’s do the first job with the first two players and then let’s see what we can do next.

“But I can give you the guarantee that we work also on different positions.”

Rohl’s update comes after he revealed as many as seven players could be set to leave Rangers in January, as he looks to free up funds for new signings.

The Ibrox club will reportedly listen to offers for Joe Rothwell, Danilo, Kieran Dowell, Nedim Bajrami and Rabbi Matondo.

Meanwhile fringe players Findlay Curtis and Lyall Cameron could be allowed to leave on loan.

Rangers also find themselves in need of new signings following injuries to Conor Barron and Dujon Sterling.

Midfielder Barron could be out for up to three months with a knee ligament injury, while Sterling faces a few weeks on the sidelines due to a hamstring issue.

This would appear to make Rangers likely to pursue their interest in their Sunderland targets, who could form part of a January overhaul.
