Rams head coach Sean McVay’s interest in ‘football junkie’ Ty Simpson revealed
The Los Angeles Rams rocked the NFL when they selected Ty Simpson in the first round. Nobody expected the Rams to take a quarterback of the future with Matthew Stafford coming off an MVP season. But at least Rams head coach Sean McVay seems to be coming around on the pick.
McVay did have some positive things to say about Simpson after the controversial pick.
“As soon as we started really studying him, there was a body of work, like I talked about, that was a good, fun evaluation,” McVay said per the team website. “A lot of the concepts that we would activate… The guy is a football junkie and plays with the timing and rhythm.”
One reason why Rams fans were furious after the selection was McVay’s seemingly frustrated attitude during a press conference following the first round. But McVay’s newest comments show that he is excited about what the team could accomplish with Simpson under center.
McVay also explained that his behavior in that press conference was in part due to his respect for Stafford.
“Well, there was some other things I was grumpy about that, you know, you just navigate normally. But I think the main thing was, you just wanted to make sure that…I would have been stoic by nature anyway, just based on the respect for Matthew, because it’s a unique situation,” McVay said.
Los Angeles has done their best to circle the wagons after the controversial pick. But the team’s decision to take a quarterback in the first round will remain under the microscope for a while.
It will be fascinating to see how Simpson looks during the preseason later this summer.
