Raiders’ Klint Kubiak sidesteps Nakobe Dean injury question
The Las Vegas Raiders significantly revamped their defense this past March, making a big move by signing linebacker Nakobe Dean to a three-year contract worth $36 million, which includes $20 million fully guaranteed. Dean is expected to lead the new defensive unit alongside fellow addition Quay Walker.
However, his status raised concerns when he missed the first session of mandatory minicamp. To ease any internal worries, assistant head coach Mike McCoy provided a reassuring update, stating that Dean has been present at the facility and participated in Monday’s official media day events.
While the coaching staff downplayed Dean’s absence, head coach Klint Kubiak was cautious when reporters asked whether Dean’s missed practice was related to an injury. In a report from the New York Times, Kubiak neither confirmed nor denied any medical issues, choosing instead to protect his player’s privacy while prioritizing the overall health of the roster before training camp.
“Nakobe’s been here every day in practice,” Kubiak stated, redirecting questions about injuries. “But all injuries and things like that, I don’t want to talk about at this time of year. We just want to get all of our guys healthy for training camp. That’s really the most important thing.”
This strategic approach ensures that Dean avoids unnecessary strain during the summer as the organization focuses on preparations for July.
Team insiders have expressed complete confidence in Dean’s situation, dismissing any notion of a crisis related to his limited on-field activity. Insider Vinny Bonsignore took to X to address fans’ concerns during optional spring workouts, bluntly stating that there was nothing to worry about and encouraging them to remain calm.
Maintaining a fully healthy roster is crucial for the Raiders to rebound from last year’s defensive struggles. Although nagging injuries limited Dean to just eight starts last season, his impressive breakout campaign in 2024, where he recorded 128 tackles and 15 starts, demonstrates exactly why the franchise decided to invest heavily in his elite skills.
