Punchestown Festival Day 2 Tips (Wednesday 29th April 2026)
Day 2 of the Punchestown Festival 2026 looks another cracking day on paper and it’s one where we should get a clearer idea of how the Cheltenham form is stacking up.
There are always a few rematches at this meeting and it can pay to side with horses who didn’t have a hard race at Cheltenham or skipped it altogether and arrive here fresher.
The Punchestown Gold Cup is the clear highlight and it should be a proper race, with Cheltenham hero Gaelic Warrior locking horns with his classy stablemate Fact To File once more.
The rest of the card has plenty of depth as well with some competitive races throughout, so it’s the sort of day where having a strong opinion can really pay off.
Here are my Punchestown Festival 2026 Day 2 tips and best bets.

Punchestown 2.30 Adare Manor Opportunity Series Final Handicap Hurdle (4YO plus) 2m31/2f
A fiercely competitive opener on Day 2 of the Punchestown Festival and an each way chance is taken on STRAIGHT JOHN for Gordon Elliott.
This horse has only had four starts but has shown quite a bit of promise already. He looked good winning at this track back in February and freshened up for this he has more to come now handicapping.
Aguellid makes the trip over for Hobbs and White and will be popular in the JP silks. He showed a good attitude to get off the mark at Wincanton and can do better again. Others to note include Radiator Springs and Thanksforthehelp at a bigger price.
Bet on STRAIGHT JOHN Each Way at 8/1 with bet365
Punchestown 3.05 Connolly’s RED MILLS Irish EBF Auction Hurdle Series Final (4YO plus) 2m31/2f
Another tricky race on paper but SIMPLY NATURAL makes plenty of appeal from an each way perspective.
She is down the bottom of the weights and has been knocking on the door of late. Conor Stone-Walsh is a jockey that has been impressing too and if she can find some more improvement she will run a big race.
Vitorio Piel looked good winning at Leopardstown and then ran well in defeat beaten 6 lengths into second at Fairyhouse so could be the danger on recent form.
L’Evangeliste is another one that is thriving so don’t underestimate but hard to be overly confident on anything in this given how open it is and the betting tells you that.
Bet on SIMPLY NATURAL Each Way at 6/1 with bet365
Punchestown 3.40 Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Hurdle (4YO plus) 2m31/2f
The yard won this last year with Kaid D’authie and they look to have a great chance again with SOIR DE GARDE.
This horse has been lightly raced but did look well above average winning at Tramore last year. He eventually fell having jumped poorly at Cork last time but should be capable of much better. He is still unexposed so if he finds more fluency he should be hard to oppose.
Bunting is capable on his best form but does need to improve on what we’ve seen recently. Riskaway is the other one who could bounce back here and run a big race as that win at Thurles earlier in the season was quite impressive albeit a maiden hurdle.
Bet on SOIR DE GARDE To Win at 3/1 with bet365
Punchestown 4.15 Channor Real Estate Group Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) 3m
There was lots to like about the way THE PASSING WIFE won at Punchestown on penultimate start.
He backed that up running a huge race to finish third in the Albert Bartlett. That was a gruelling race and he showed a really likeable attitude to stick to the task in the closing stages. He has more to come over this trip and is worth sticking with.
Doctor Steinberg obviously blew out at Cheltenham eventually pulling up but such was the promise of those wins before that he could bounce back and be the danger. Espresso Milan at a bigger price could also get back on track and hit the frame here.
Bet on THE PASSING WIFE To Win at 4/1 with bet365
Punchestown 4.50 Race & Stay At Punchestown Champion I.N.H. Flat Race (Grade 1) 2m1/2f
I try not to have strong opinions in bumpers but such was the promise of that Champion Bumper win from THE MOURNE RAMBLER at Cheltenham he is difficult to oppose here. He is chasing a perfect 3-3 under Rules and looks the one to side with.
I know the third Bass Hunter didn’t do the form much at Aintree but I wouldn’t let that concern me too much.
Dromard was impressive on debut but hard to know the substance of that form. He could improve again and be the danger though and the market is definitely fearful of his chances.
The Wager looks best of the rest but don’t rule anything out with confidence as anything can take a big step forward given how lightly raced they are.
Bet on THE MOURNE RAMBLER To Win at 2/1 with bet365
Punchestown 5.25 Colm Quinn BMW Handicap Chase (Grade 3) 2m41/2f
Another tough race but I do feel the market has it right with KING ALEXANDER at the top of the betting for Mullins and Townend. He impressed winning at Gowran and then ran a big race at 20/1 to finish fourth behind Meetmebythesea at Cheltenham. His form is very solid coming into this and he looks the one to beat now.
Nouvotic has won 2 of his last 3 and showed a good attitude at Wexford. He lacks a run but if fit and ready to go could emerge as the danger. At double figures Conyers Hill looks capable of rattling the frame and might be worthy of an each way saver.
Bet on KING ALEXANDER To Win at 7/2 with bet365
Punchestown 6.05 Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup (Grade 1) 3m1f
The race we’ve all been waiting for the Punchestown Gold Cup!
It is quite hard to split the top two in the betting but GAELIC WARRIOR was so impressive in the Cheltenham Gold Cup I do think he might hold the edge.
That was a career best and given he beat his stablemate here in the John Durkan over shorter earlier in the season I fancy him to confirm it over 3 miles.
Fact To File is a seriously classy horse and he did beat Gaelic Warrior convincingly at the Dublin Racing Festival.
The latter is by no means in love with that track though so I think it’ll be a different scenario here. Inothewayurthinkin did well to get as close as he did in the Gold Cup last time and has given himself a platform to build on at least.
Bet on GAELIC WARRIOR To Win at 5/4 with bet365
Punchestown 6.35 Weatherbys General Stud Book Irish EBF Mares Flat Race (Grade 3) 2m1/2f
A mares bumper to conclude Day 2 and COOLE CAFE could be a bit of each way value. She has won 3 from 4 overall and showed a likeable attitude to prevail at Limerick.
This is obviously tougher but she might be able to find the necessary improvement to come out on top.
Glens Anthem is likely to go off favourite and certainly impressed bolting up on debut at Navan last month. Again hard to gauge what she beat but she couldn’t really have done it any easier and she will be popular.
Bet on COOLE CAFE Each Way at 8/1 with bet365
My top tip for the Punchestown Festival on Wednesday
I really like the claims of THE PASSING WIFE following that huge run in the Albert Bartlett. He looks good value to back that up here and I’ve doubled him up with GAELIC WARRIOR in the Punchestown Gold Cup as he looks to get one over his stablemate in Fact To File again.
Bet a Win Double on THE PASSING WIFE and GAELIC WARRIOR at 10/1 with bet365
