PSG v Newcastle prediction

The Magpies head to the Parc des Princes having managed just one win from their last four outings, a run that includes Sunday’s Premier League defeat to Aston Villa at St James’ Park.

That setback saw Eddie Howe’s side slip to ninth in the Premier League standings, leaving them five points adrift of the Champions League qualification places.

Despite recent domestic struggles, Newcastle have impressed in Europe this season and currently sit seventh in the expanded 36-team Champions League table.

Victory in Paris would likely be enough to secure automatic qualification for the last 16, avoiding the need for a two-legged play-off.

The Tyneside club are part of a tightly packed group of eight teams placed between sixth and 13th, all locked on 13 points, with goal difference expected to play a decisive role in determining the top-eight finish.

PSG, last season’s treble winners, have shown signs of inconsistency of late, losing two of their last four matches in all competitions. However, Friday night’s victory away at Auxerre lifted Luis Enrique’s side back to the top of the Ligue 1 table for the first time since November.

The Parisians have been strong at home, winning five of their last six matches at the Parc des Princes, and will be keen to extend that run to ensure they avoid the Champions League knockout phase play-offs.

Like Newcastle, PSG also sit on 13 points heading into the final round of fixtures, though their superior goal difference, five goals better than ninth-placed Barcelona, means that any kind of victory should be enough to seal their place in the last 16.

Newcastle will take confidence from previous meetings with PSG in this competition, having faced the French side twice in the group stage two years ago.

The Magpies claimed an emphatic 4–1 win at St James’ Park before earning a 1–1 draw in Paris, although a repeat of that result this time around may not be sufficient for either side.

PSG have the stronger of the two squads ahead of tonight’s games though and will be roared on by their vociferous home crowd against a Newcastle side have been far from their best on the road this season, with only three away wins in all competitions all campaign – I’m predicting a 3-1 home win.

PSG v Newcastle betting tips

PSG prosper in Paris

PSG won the treble last year and will not be willing to give their first ever European title without a fight, and will be confident of getting the better of a Newcastle side depleted by injury in front of their home fans.

The Magpies also know a win will put them into the last 16 though, and will be well up for the fight though their missing of key players and their less than ideal away record should see them struggle.

Ousmane to oust Magpies

Reigning Ballon d’Or champion Ousmane Dembele has battled through injury this season but still managed to score eight goals in 10 starts throughout the campaign, including four in as many starts since the turn of the year, and is expected to be involved from the off tonight.

Thiaw book bound

Malick Thiaw has been booked on more occasions this season than anyone else expected to start tonight’s game, having been the recipient of a yellow card on six occasions so far in the campaign.
