Prince Naseem Hamed slammed for ‘disgusting lies’ over late former trainer during film release

Prince Naseem Hamed has been criticised by Johnny Nelson for his comments on late ex-coach Brendan Ingle.

Hamed became one of the biggest superstars in the sport, making a meteoric rise under the guidance of famous coach Ingle in Sheffield.

Hamed said Ingle was ‘money motivated’ but still gave huge credit to the trainer who helped so much with his career

Ingle brought through Hamed as a talented youngster and helped him rampage to becoming world champion in the paid ranks.

But with his sensational run came bigger events, which brought lucrative purses, fans and fame.

The pair then split after a behind the scenes row in 1998, and didn’t speak or rekindle their partnership.

Ingle passed away in 2018, but their story was recreated in a recent biopic ‘Giant’ which documented Hamed’s famous career.

Hamed joined talkSPORT, where he discussed how he ‘wasn’t happy’ with some of the film’s recollections of their relationship.

He also claimed that Ingle was ‘money orientated’, and defended suggestions that he didn’t pay Ingle enough of his fight purses.

Nelson, who came through the Ingle Boxing Gym in Sheffield alongside Brendan during his own career, was quick to defend the late coach’s honour.

And he was quick to criticise the boxing icon’s comments about Ingle, branding them as ‘lies’.

The former cruiserweight champion told talkSPORT: “I think it was disgusting.

“A lot of things he has said during the premiere are disgusting, they are lies.

“He told it from his point of view, we all had the talk about money. Brendan was never about money.

“Brendan was in the same house when he died, Naseem was the one who lived on the other side of town.

“Silence is compliance, so I have to say something, it is complete bull****. You hear him contradict himself.

“I’ve shone light on the wrongs he is saying. I don’t understand what he is saying, why did Brendan walk away if it was about the money?”

Nelson turned professional six years prior to Hamed, so was in and around the gym during the same stint.

The British star retired as an Ingle fighter with the pair working together until the end of his career in 2005, which finished with Nelson as a WBO title holder.

Hamed on Ingle relationship

Ultimately, Hamed and Ingle never hashed out their differences and bring their personal relationship back to good terms.

But although having different versions of events, the flamboyant fighter did remain respectful to his former mentor.

He told talkSPORT: “So all of my fundamentals were laid down for my boxing career by Brendan.

“We can never take anything away from him, that was so important. I got better in a fast way.

“We had an amazing relationship, he saw me and I saw him more than my family.”
