Pistons’ Cade Cunningham joins LeBron James in historically bad playoff club
Cade Cunningham’s high tendency to turn the ball over had him make unfortunate NBA history that featured LeBron James following the Detroit Pistons’ Game 4 clash with the Orlando Magic on Monday night.
Cunningham is going through the fifth season of his career and his second playoff appearance. He shines as the Pistons’ top star and leading scorer, on pace for a well-deserved All-NBA selection.
However, he had a rough performance in Game 4 against the Magic defense. In 39 minutes of action, he finished with a stat line of 25 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two blocks. However, he turned the ball over eight times and shot 7-of-23 from the field, including 3-of-11 from beyond the arc, and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. His turnovers, having also committed nine of them in Game 3, made playoff history in the process, per reporter Tomer Azarly.
“Cade Cunningham is the 2nd player in NBA playoff history to record 17 or more turnovers in a 2-game span in the same postseason. He joins LeBron James in 2008,” Azarly wrote.
How Cade Cunningham, Pistons played against Magic
Cade Cunningham and the Pistons are in an incredibly difficult situation this postseason. Despite winning 60 or more games in the regular season for the first time since 2006, they now face a 3-1 series deficit as their playoff run is in danger as the East’s top seed.
Perimeter shooting and turnovers made the difference in this matchup. The Magic prevailed in both categories after making nine 3-pointers on a 26% clip and limited their turnovers to just 12. It was the opposite for the Pistons as they only converted six triples on 20% accuracy and committed 20 turnovers throughout the game.
Three players scored in double-digits for Detroit in the loss, including Cunningham. Tobias Harris came second in scoring with 20 points, six rebounds, one steal, and a block. Jalen Duren came next with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Isaiah Stewart provided eight points and eight blocks.
The Pistons will fight to keep their season alive when they host the Magic in Game 5. The matchup will take place on April 29 as tip-off commences at 7 p.m. ET.
