Philip Rivers has already made decision on next career move days after NFL dream comes to an end

Philip Rivers has promised he is actually done this time.

After his remarkable three-game comeback to the NFL, the 44-year-old said on Wednesday that we won’t see him play NFL football again.

Rivers was asked whether he is actually retiring this time by Kay Adams on the “Up & Adams” show.

“I am,” Rivers said before explaining why he actually decided to unretire in the first place.

“There’s no chance, it was a place I’d been, a team I was familiar with, the offense was exactly the same, a coach I knew.

“It was all those things, our football season was over, all those things made it the perfect storm.”

Rivers went on to explain that he will go back to coaching his son’s high school team in 2026 with an added pull that is impossible to resist.

“I’ve got a son that will be a senior,” he added.

“It’ll be his senior year and I’m looking forward to it. My second son will be a ninth grader so they’ll be on the same team together, so it’ll be fun to get back.

“This was a fun three-week blur that nobody saw coming, including myself. And that’ll be it.”

The school he will be coaching is called St Michael Catholic. His son, Gunner Rivers, is their quarterback and is rated a 4* recruit by ESPN.

“I’ll be right back on the sideline [coaching],” Rivers also said. “I’m sure many watching probably said that’s probably where you belong.”

talkSPORT reacts... A feel-good factor before inevitable Colts crash

The Colts were destined for the playoffs when they were 7-2 and Daniel Jones was leading the way. Sauce Gardner was acquired via trade and an overtime win over the Falcons in Berlin had team feeling unstoppable.

But six straight defeats have followed and many are wondering how they became the first team since the 1995 Raiders to start 8-2 and not qualify for the playoffs

The Colts’ 0-6 record began once Jones played through his broken fibula and tore his Achilles tendon in the span of a month.

So, with backup Richardson already out,and the team down to their third choice. Enter Rivers and there was something deeply inspirational about watching him roll back the years.

In three games, Rivers completed 63% of his passes, threw for 544 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Far from his best, but the Colts were destined for a collapse, Rivers ensured some fun on the way.

Rivers, who went 0-3 with the Colts in his comeback, decided to un-retire on a day’s notice after that call from head coach Shane Steichen

He kept them competitive in games against playoff-bound Seattle Seahawks, 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars, but in the end, it wasn’t enough to salvage their postseason hopes and stop the inevitable slide they were on after their QB1 and QB2 were out with injuries.

Four weeks after his comeback, Rivers made clear that he has no regrets about his decision to come back.

“I told you guys I wasn’t going to have any regrets about coming back and I don’t,” Rivers said after the Colts’ 23-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Other than us not winning … it’s been an absolute blast for three weeks. If I go back and say, ‘All right, now you know everything’s going to happen, what are you going to do?’

“I’d do it all again. It’s been absolutely awesome. So, yeah, I mean, if it’s the last one, it’s the last one.”

The Colts still have their season finale against the Houston Texans this week, but are expected to start rookie Riley Leonard instead.

“I’m going to be on board and supportive of whatever the organization, [Steichen] and however that decision’s going to come to be,” Rivers added.

“I’m sure I’ll have some conversation. It won’t just be a blindside Tuesday conversation from him.”

Ultimately, we cannot say the Rivers’ experiment worked because the Colts did not make the playoffs, having been 8-2 after a win Germany.

However there’s little doubt the veteran did everything in his power to try to salvage the hope that appeared to vanish when Daniel Jones injury struck.
