Padres manager shares Manny Machado injury update after defeating Cubs
The San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 9-7 on Monday night at Petco Park, improving to 19-9 on the season after returning from a Mexico City series. San Diego built an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Chicago answered with a second-inning solo home run and a third-inning grand slam to take a 5-3 advantage.
The Padres kept responding throughout the game. Miguel Andujar brought in a run via a fielder’s choice in the third inning. Nick Castellanos drove in a two-RBI single in the fifth, Ty France contributed two RBIs with a seventh-inning triple, and Gavin Sheets clinched the win with a solo home run in the eighth inning.
On the mound, Mason Miller allowed his first earned runs of the season, ending a franchise-best 34.2-inning scoreless streak. He finished with three hits allowed in the final frame, and his ERA moved to 1.26.
Seven-time All-Star Manny Machado, who was a consistent threat at the plate, left the game with a lower left leg issue. The 33-year-old went 3-for-4 with two doubles, including his 400th career double in the fifth inning off Matthew Boyd, which also forced Boyd out of the game. Machado showed discomfort after multiple slides into second base and was later removed after grounding out in the sixth inning, with his exit coming at the start of the seventh.
San Diego manager Craig Stammen provided an update on the two-time Gold Glove winner’s status, saying his removal was precautionary.
“He’s fine,” Stammen told reporters. “We took him out as precaution. It looked like he was just going down the line a little slow, came out of the box a little awkwardly. He had a couple slides at second that didn’t feel great on his lower half. So we’ll talk to him tomorrow, see how he’s feeling, and then evaluate him going forward.”

Defensively, the Padres shifted Ty France from first base to third, while Gavin Sheets entered at first following Machado’s departure.
For the season, the three-time Silver Slugger has played 26 games, batting .209 with a .327 on-base percentage, a .690 OPS, four home runs, and 16 RBIs while playing under his 11-year, $350 million contract running through 2033
